On the eve of the VII Leipzig

Wolfgang Harkenthal, director of the Leipzig Short Film Festival, visited our publishing house. Here is what he said about the next festival, which will be held in November this year.

This year marks the tenth anniversary of the birth of our festival. It all started in 1955, when film workers from the West and the East met in Leipzig to discuss their concerns and problems. And the very first festival aroused such interest in the world that we decided to turn it into a traditional international film screening.

The biggest masters of documentary cinema on the planet meet at our screenings. John Grierson and Ilya Kopalin, Roman Carmen and Alberto Cavalcanti, Theodore Christensen and Paul Rothe, Basil Wright and Edgar Anstey watch their own films and films of their fellow classics of documentary cinema. These are flashbacks. So far, we have held four such retrospectives: Dziga Vertov, Alberto Cavalcanti, Joris Evans and Robert Flaherty.

This year's Eighth festival is dedicated to the twentieth anniversary of the liberation of the German people from fascism. Anti—fascist films from the thirties and forties will be shown. Cinematographers from many socialist countries, as well as the USA, Canada, Italy, France, Sweden, Belgium, Spain, and England, expressed their desire to participate in this screening. The German Democratic Republic will show the Thorndikes' best anti-fascist films.

The festival will be very representative. Applications have already been received from twenty-five countries, including from very young cinematographers in Iraq and Cambodia.

It should be noted that only film screenings will be held during the festival. A meeting of the Administrative council of the International Association of Documentary Filmmakers will be held in Leipzig, as well as a competition for the best television report conducted by the International Organization of Radio and Television.

It's too early to talk about specific films participating in the festival. I can only say that one of the participants of the competition will be a two-part film by Roman Carmen "The Great Patriotic War". We also hope that Mikhail Romm's film "Ordinary Fascism" will be presented at the festival.

About the film "Miraculous" and Nina Menshikova

I went through the screens of "Miraculous". And again, together with Nina Menshikova's heroines, we are experiencing their difficult fates, remember, even in the cheerful, sparkling with laughter and enthusiasm "Girls" (directed by Yu. Chulyukin) Vera's mom is in a lot of trouble. Nina Evgenievna is currently starring in M. Donskoy's film "Mother's Heart". This film is dedicated to a wonderful woman who gave the world so many children, M. A. Ulyanova. Menshikova plays the role of Anna Ilyinichna, Vladimir Ilyich's sister.

What are the actress' immediate plans? She really wants to play a comedic role. It seems that this time her dream is destined to come true. I am the director. Segel invited her to star in the film "Grey Sickness". Here, for the first time, the artist will play the role of a completely happy woman, a beloved wife, and a loving mother. And besides, the profession of her future heroine reminds Nina of her youth, when she dreamed of becoming an astronomer.
